Chapter 12

Zoe

Theo parked in our normal spot, and I jumped out of the car. I was so happy to see my apartment. I desperately wanted to stop in and talk to Jamal. I turned back to Theo. He rolled his eyes at me before I even got the words out. “We can see if he’s home,” Theo drawled. I knew he had issues with Jamal. I’m not entirely sure what those issues were, considering Jamal was gay, but whatever. I rushed to the door.

“Who’s Jamal?” Ivey asked.

“He’s a friend and the manager of this complex.” Theo labored forward. I let myself into the building and jetted straight for Jamal’s door. I knocked but no one answered. I pouted. I hadn’t seen him since Saturday. He must be studying or taking tests like the rest of us. I turned in time to see Ivey and Preston entering the main door with Theo. “Not here?” Theo asked.

“No, he’s probably taking exams.” I trudged up the stairs to my apartment.

“Do you guys share an apartment?” Ivey asked. I could almost hear the double meaning in her words. Why did everyone just assume we were together?

“No, Theo’s got his own place across the hall.” I pointed to his place as I stuck the key into my own lock. I swung the door wide and remembered the last time I was here. I had woken to a relatively normal day before finding out my entire life had been a lie. If I could just rewind to Theo bringing scones and coffee and me not saying anything about the dream, that’d be great. Too bad that’s not how life worked. Now that the cat was out of the bag, I was just going to have to deal with the consequences.

Ivey came through the door behind me. “You’ve got a nice place.”

“Ah, thanks,” I grabbed the two cups that we left on the end table in the living room and pitched them into the trash. “I just need to grab some clothes and books. I shouldn’t be too long.” I gestured to the couch. “Feel free to make yourself comfortable.” I noticed that Preston hadn’t come in with her. Did he go with Theo? Were they going to try to question us separately to see what they could get out of us? Damn, I hated that I didn’t know how to handle this situation. What if Theo talked? I blew out a breath as I walked to my bedroom. It’s not like there was anything to tell. We’ve kissed once. Theo had been cold as ice since. I still wasn’t even sure he liked me. Our kiss was certainly filled with passion, but the pushing me away after was harsh. How in the hell was I supposed to figure all this out without having someone to talk to?

I heard a noise behind me at the door. “I like your collection of books. I’m a Poe fan myself.” She pointed to the small bookshelf I had next to my desk.
